Either way, it’s a pleasure to have the historical perspective you offer here. If I could add anything, perhaps in the broader picture sometimes we lose sight of the ancient things hidden in our little communities and families. There’s still witchcraft, magic and the warp and weft of fate pulling us this way and that, and sometimes it seems that all the world is a winter night with only the hearth to illuminate the darkness. Maybe that’s how the Greeks felt as they kept the flame alive at Delphi.

In my mind, at least, it’s a metaphor for the embers of the faith in life itself that characterizes womankind. But you’re right: only a fool would believe it could be absent in a surviving people.

Of course, he added that it’s all changing these days, because everyone’s losing community and local character due to the information age. He sounded as though he preferred the old, paranoid edgy past to the Brave New World growing up around us. I think I do, too.

If company A does something high tech, it cultivates employees, customers, and suppliers that make it substantially easier and cheaper for company B to do something high tech, and this benefit is not captured by company A, unless, as in South Korea during the dictatorship, the state gives company A substantial monopolistic privileges, something difficult to do in a democracy, particularly a democracy where covetousness is deemed the highest virtue and high status.

And if company A stops doing something high tech causing other companies to stop doing high tech stuff – you have the rust belt, which is the network of high skilled white males unravelling. You have smart white men deskilling, taking opiates, and committing suicide.

That the rust belt is rusting means that white males commit suicide or move to the big coastal megacities. Which means they move from where their votes are useful to Trump and Republicans, to where their votes are useless, because massively outvoted by hordes of aliens imported to live on crime, welfare, and voting Democrat.

Stopping the rust gives republicans a little more time, regardless of whether it is economically justified or not. Even if it was a total money loser (and quite likely externalities make it economically lucrative) it would still be politically a big winner, by halting the great centralization.

Recollect that the government was importing hordes of black male military age Mohammedans screaming for infidel blood and white pussy, and bombing marginal electorates in flyover country with them. The permanent government continued doing this for the first year of the Trump presidency, but in 2017 December, Trump finally managed to put a stop to it. This also gives Trump and Republicans a little more time.

A policy of economic autarky ruined Nazi Germany. The very similar Smoot Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 was also an economic disaster, ruining the USA. And, similarly, India’s program of economic autarky kept India stagnant and desperately poor for decades. But these three examples of bad, indeed utterly disastrous, protectionism were accompanied by massive regulation. Trump is deregulating. That is a big and important difference.

Chinese steel is shipped directly from Tianjin to the Port of Vancouver. So it doesn’t really matter whether the Canadians are selling us domestically produced steel (probably produced from Chinese import billet anyway) or simply turning the Chinese produced steel over and selling it directly to US consumers. They are effectively middlemen in either case, and middlemen we certainly don’t need.

Because of this kind of practice, the 25% tariff has to be across the board.

It’s sad for me here in the Pac. NW just a short drive from Vancouver to see trainloads of raw materials heading north to Canadian ports to be shipped to China, only to see them returning as value added products like steel and finished lumber. We aren’t even getting the benefit of the port jobs that handle the coal — it all goes up to Roberts Bank near the Tsawassen ferry terminal, less than a mile north of the border. Americans are really getting screwed by these deals, and what do we get in return? Overvalued tech companies that offer us lousy entertainment and “social media” at the expense of our privacy and real communities.

Then publish the results of the investigation and have the DOJ prosecute the various guilty parties.
Criminalize the public advocacy of gun control, using the anti-BDS template. Any television or radio station advocating gun control would lose its broadcasting license. Any corporation advocating gun control would lose its federal contracts.
Announce mandatory carry reciprocity between states on pain of losing federal highway funds.
Stop all federal funding to all universities, colleges, and schools that ban guns on campus.
Announce an executive order suspending all state and local gun control laws.

So, let's not pretend that I'm not as hard core and absolutist about gun rights as anyone else. That being said, John Derbyshire is right. Who else do we have besides Trump? There is no point in taking your ball and going home, because unless you are actually going to go out and take action to shut down the gun control advocates by yourself, the God-Emperor is literally all we have on the political front.

I'm not saying that we should support him in even speaking soothing words to the insane people who want to kill him and impose a violent dictatorship on a disarmed American people. I'm not saying that I think his actions are wise, well-advised, or even sensible. I'm not saying that one shouldn't feel discouraged, annoyed, or even angry about what looks very much like a foolish and unnecessarily damaging political blunder.

But I am saying that it accomplishes nothing to throw a tantrum and very publicly withdraw your support from the God-Emperor, especially when we all know that you're going to be slinking back and hoping that no one notices when you try to quietly clamber back aboard the Trump Train rather than be left behind with Ben Shapiro, Bill Kristol, Mona Charen, Rick Wilson, and all the rest of the Never-Trump losers.

At the very least, wait until Trump actually does something rather than merely makes another of his self-contradictory public statements before you reach any firm conclusions about his actual intentions or the probable consequences.

I have just finished seeing my family move
Up into these mountains.
The last of my children and grandchildren
Have all moved up here.
My grandson just got his first job here at Kmart.”

I smiled, for I could see and hear
the pride, relief, and accomplishment
In her face and in her voice.

“Do you live up here with them?” I asked her.

I had figured this was why
she had prayed her family up here,
so they could be with her.

But I was wrong.

“Oh, no; I still live down in the valley…”

She must have seen the distress upon my face
when I heard that. Her words tore at me.
Hadn’t the Lord warned her about living in the valley?
Was God now wanting me to warn her?
Surely He would want His children
To know of the danger!

“But the valley is not a safe place!
A great destruction shall come upon it-”

“Ah yes!” She said, interrupting me with my concern,
“I know very well, that there will be a great earthquake,
And that the waters will come up and cover the land.
That is why I have moved all of my family up here
To this higher ground!”

“Oh honey, don’t worry about me!
I’ve already lived my life!
I’ll be ready when those waters come.

I’ll be grabbing a hold of as many people around me as I possibly can,
I’ll even grab them by their hair if I have to,
Before yelling, “O.K. Lord! My hands are full; take us up!”

“But what about your family?

The Most Important Thing A Man Can Study

Sales, game, marketing, a good part of common sense, wisdom. All of these words are largely describing the same thing. The right understanding of this thing has made kings of men and made legends of commoners. It has allowed for take over of vast empires and was required for the empires to be built up in the first place. Without it you’d have a hard time consistently making sales or scoring dates, much less winning a war, cultural or otherwise. This thing has allowed evil to prosper when evil takes advantage of it. Likewise this thing has also allowed for good to grow in a fallen world.

Now I think I’ve teased enough and you’re probably wondering what on earth I’m talking about. What I’m talking about is the most valuable skill that a man can learn and that is to have an understanding of human nature. This goes by many names I always thought of it as wisdom but I’ve heard it called other things. And like I said sales, game, marketing, politics, and pretty much everything else on this earth revolved around it. If you fail to grasp it you’ll fail to attain success in life likewise grasp it and gain a deep understanding of it and the world will be putty in your hands for better or for worse.

The Irrational Ape

I do not mean to say that we are nothing but brute beasts completely enslaved to our lessen nature but rather to say that for the most of humanity the animal nature holds sway over the angel nature. As many wise men have pointed out man is a “cross” between an animal and something higher. In order for a man to attain success he must master both nature’s. He must bring the animal nature under his control and work towards the higher nature and cultivate it. But we are talking about a select group of any population.

The masses as a whole for better or for worse are completely controlled by their animal nature. The study and understanding of this animal nature therefore is essential for getting what you want from this world. Whether you simply want to get rich and go retire to a nice island and watch the world burn from a safe distance or whether you want to change the path that we’re on for the better, you’ll need a deep understanding of this.

As great as logic and morality are, and as essential as they are for all the best things in man, they in and of themselves are not good motivators and not enough to affect change. Hence those who appeal to the baser instincts often win out against those who try to raise everyone higher. I remember good copywriting was once described to me as essentially telling people which of the 7 deadly sin that the product or service would fufill but in flowery language. This may have been a bit of an exaggeration but there is truth to what was said.

Hacking The Human Animal

Those who are power in today’s day and age did not get there through sword (or gun) or through might. They got there through understanding the human animal. Identifying weak points or things that could be exploited and then doing so. They found that wisdom (meaning understanding of human nature) was more powerful than the sword, or the pen, or anything else for that matter.

Right now you have many conservatives reading “Rules For Radicals” after being soundly defeated since…well since their inception essentially (has the world gotten more or less conservative?) because they are starting to learn that without a understanding of human nature all the good intentions in the world are worthless. The same could be said of any political party, tribe, business, or anything else.

Those who understand human nature lead men for better or for worse. The two most valuable attributes you can develop are strength and wisdom. And in today’s day and age when a giant global power structure has legions of sheep dogs to call down on you should you display strength against them I’d say that wisdom is the more important one (but obviously both should be developed as much as possible). Things are more determined by the pen than by the sword today.

To Lead Mankind

Again whether you want to start a successful business, start a cult with lots of groupies, or lead mankind to the next golden age the development of wisdom meaning the understanding of human nature is critical. I’ve talked about many important skills on this site and how to develop them but broken down they basically fall into developing strength or wisdom. I’ll break this down further eventually but for now just understand the critical importance of grasping human nature.

Setting aside the praxis vs. doxos dimension of religion (and what constitutes religion), there's also the dimension of "theology/beliefs on the supernatural" versus "morals/ethics/vision of the good life." And it seems to me that a big part of "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism," as contrasted with more Traditional varieties of religious life/practice, is that it retains the former* while discarding the latter in favor of the ethics of the secular mainstream. You know, the sort of folks who say that what's wrong with religion isn't so much the whole "God" thing, or the "going to church/temple/mosque/shrine" thing, but the surviving, "backwards, bad ol'" pre-Modern ethics.

But what does one call the reverse of this? Those who disagree with Traditional religion on the whole "God" question, but think that those parts on dealing with your fellow man were more right than Modern, liberal "ethics"? Who say that while one can credibly dispute whether those who set the words of the Old Testament to parchment had experiences with God, one cannot dispute they had plenty of experience with their fellow human beings. Who might disagree with Saint Paul about the nature of Jesus, but agree with him on the nature of women? What does one call atheist fans of the Albigensian Crusade and the Inquisitions?

*For a time, at least, but the statistics show that churches that "go MTD" tend to die as their congregations — or more specifically, what kids they have — assimilate into the secular mainstream, per the centuries-old criticism of deism as gateway/slippery slope to atheism.

I have become convinced that freedom of religion was, in its time, considered sufficient for ensuring communal freedom in the United States. To British settlers and early Americans, the church was the community. I don’t think anyone who knows American history can honestly argue against that point. Thus we are left only with individual rights, which are inconsequential to an organization with a monopoly on force, e.g. the ATF and FBI in 1993 during the Waco siege.

When Christians no longer have the right to form their own communities according to their own principles, they are rendered impotent and defenseless.

Freedom of religion is essential in that there is ultimately no rational basis for human rights or liberty. As was made clear in the founding documents of the United States, our rights are God-given, and not subject to repeal based on sophistry or the declamations of prophet killers or would-be deicides.
