Separation of church and state has been misinterpreted by the left just as SCOTUS has misinterpreted the Constitution. This is what happens when progressives get power...they use it to destroy.
The separation of church and state means that the government cannot CREATE it's own religion or otherwise make itself a dictator of religion. It is not a clause that allows religion to be struck from the public square, nor does it allow for the persecution of people with religious beliefs. The Constitution guarantees that people have the right to express their religion publicly.
Atheists, communists, progressives, homosexuals....they have deliberately and intentionally misconstrued the First Amendment because they refuse to live by the moral code found in religion. They have fought to get it taken out of the public square and out of the Constitution as a right. Go through all the damage done by these people, and also look at their behaviors at any given time. They lie, cheat, practice immoral sex acts, and they all just plain act immorally, unethically and unconscionably. And they do so because they do not accept the religion or its adherence to a moral code. To them, this is proper behavior; and unlike those who have religious beliefs, they have no intention of ending their illicit behaviors. Those of us who do have a moral conscience understand that we also partake in bad, immoral behavior, but we concede such, ask for forgiveness, repent, respond as Jesus asked us to..."to sin no more."
Separation of church and state is NOT in the Constitution or any where else in government documents. Jefferson ONLY mentioned it once in his response to the Baptists, the so-called veil of separation, meaning the government would not go after the Baptists if they had a cake sale after church services on Sunday. As it was a part of the Baptists church activities, Jefferson told them to go ahead. In those days, if you knew your history, commercial activities were not allowed on Sundays...it was a day for church and family. THIS is the true meaning of separation of church and state as Jefferson wrote it simply to a specific request to allow commercial activities on Sunday. His simple response, which has been taken soooo out of context, was merely confirmation that the state/government WOULD NOT INTERFERE IN CHURCH ACTIVITIES!
The church(es) don't stay out of government business...they have hospitals, schools, and other institutions and organizations to help the poor, to provide adoptions, and to be a part of the government in very many ways.
Most importantly, beyond any reasonable doubt, is the INTENT of the Founders/Framers of how this government would work and what its powers were. Foremost is the fact they based our government and founding documents on Christian/Judeo beliefs. The Declaration of Independence makes this pluperfectly clear: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,..." That means that GOD endowed us with the unalienable rights of life, liberty and PURSUIT of happiness...NOT the government. And what GOD has given us, no government can take away. Our entire government is based on this declaration.
Further, the Declaration also states: "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed." WHAT THAT MEANS is that when we find ourselves in a government that usurps our declaration, when the Government rules however it wants with total disregard to our rights, when the people find the government is ruling us by changing our laws for "light and transient" causes (such as SCOTUS did with gay marriage!), then "WE THE PEOPLE" have the right to ABOLISH this government and institute a new government that will act accordingly to our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
THAT, my friend, is what separation of church and state means.
