Police are investigating whether an independent federal candidate committed a hate crime by telling high school students homosexuals should be executed.

David Popescu was invited to participate in a federal candidates' discussion at Sudbury Secondary School on Tuesday. He made the comment after a student asked his opinion of gay marriage.

Within hours, the Greater Sudbury Police Service said they were investigating.

"We are actively conducting a criminal investigation in this matter," deputy police chief Frank Elsner said.

The police service plans to share its evidence with the provincial Attorney General's office, which will provide direction on whether or not a criminal charge is warranted. More than 200 students gathered in the school's auditorium to hear candidates from the NDP, Liberal Party and the First Peoples National Party.

Popescu introduced himself with a public prayer, blaming environmental damage and economic unrest on the wickedness of society. His comments were met with silence as some students grimaced and shifted in their seats.

Near the end of the more than two-hour event, students were invited to ask the candidates questions. As a long line of pupils waited to speak, Popescu told a young female student who asked about stem cell research that, "God would hurt" those who had an abortion.

The crowd jeered and many rose to their feet in protest after Popescu answered another teenager's question on gay marriage.

During a telephone interview later in the day, Popescu reasserted his view.

"A young man asked me what I think of homosexual marriages and I said I think homosexuals should be executed," he said. "My whole reason for running is the Bible and the Bible couldn't be more clear on that point."

His parents were homeschooling him and carefully selecting readings that accorded with the Christian worldview. Their first mistake came when they allowed him to read the Narnia books, which they thought reflected the Bible despite the magical elements. I can't remember exactly how he got his hands on Harry Potter, but it was something like he went to a bookstore one time with an auntie who asked him what kinds of books he liked, and he said "Narnia", so she bought him a Harry Potter book.

That night, he awoke in a cold sweat screaming. His parents kept asking him was what the matter and he replied using strange words that they hadn't heard before. Under the covers of his bed they found one of the Harry Potter books, he had read about three-fourths of it. He wasn't able to function normally and his parents sent him to a Christian counsellor, who suggested sending him to a Christian camp for psychologically-disturbed children.

When Pastor K came to hear of this story, he related it to us in a memorable sermon called "Hogwarts: Hogwash". He also told us that there is a homosexual character in the books, which hardly seems appropriate for children. And he said that even though Lewis and Tolkien claimed to be Christians, we should not be wary of letting our children read their books or watch the films, because children may confuse fantasy with reality. (e.g. many children poke around in the wardrobe after reading C.s. Lewis, hoping to find a magical kingdom there, just as children try summoning up the Devil after reading Harry Potter) I myself read Lewis and Tolkien and enjoyed them before I was saved, but if Nancy and I are lucky enough to be blessed with children, we will not be permitting our children to read this material. Any other parent should think hard before sending their children into this world of uncertainty.

This subject is so close to my heart...since my brother-in-law is gay...he has wanted to take my sons...one at a time...during summer break...my sons are 13 and 15...I have been coming up with excuse after excuse...I truly am not afraid that my brother-in-law would ever touch them..but he lives in the heart of the gay section in his city..and he only goes to gay establishments...even his apartment only has gays in it...that makes me fearful for my sons....my brother-in-law tells me that "gays are not pedophiles and would never touch a child!!!' But I have to wonder since he started his dabbling at the age of 15! I love him, but I just can't accept his lifestyle. I know we live in an age where tolerance of almost every perversion is supposed to be cool...but in the bible it tells me something different....and I don't see tolerance for sin in the pages of that wonderful book...if we accept everything...and try not to rock anyones boat...then we have lost our witness completely. We need to witness to gays in a loving way..without hitting them over the head with the Word...but they need to hear what God thinks about their sexual choice.

See how all the End Time movies make up rapture scenarios as if they were Truth? Now, unbelievers may be seeking THAT kind of rapture and when it doesn't occur like that, they won't think it's the Rapture that's been spoken of so much. They'll be easily deluded.

As for anything being left behind that's also conjecture. It's possible that in our "renewal" or "change" that those things just disappear or disintegrate.


I think the End Times movies have done a great disservice. They've made conjecture and personal interpretation into accepted truth/fact.

I think we should, as conservatives, add an approach to our agenda that cannot be silenced by anyone. And that is the personal expression of religion in the government. No one can stop a legislator, a judge or even the Governor or President, from having a Bible open in their office, or in their sessions. It simply is not an issue.

It is the public expression of a private individual in a way that brings attention, maybe even agitation, but is completely harmless to any rational person. No one should mind it; because likewise the Muslim legislator should have his Qu'ran opened if he feels it is so prudent, the Jew the Torah or Hebrew Bible.

And so forth.

I think this should be mentioned by conservatives and we should get a petition going to get some of our faithful brothers in office to do this.

Well I have a cousin who asked if she could bring a friend to our Thanksgiving dinner. I said sure no problem there is always enough. Well she came with her friend and she was very nice. Teaches at KU, very likeable. Well as the day progressed I asked my cousin if her husband was coming. She replied " well I have an announcement". "I am getting divorced and I am gay and this is my partner ___". Well needless to say I was floored as well as my dh. Nobody else was upset about it. Fast forward to 2 years ago. They wanted a baby so they ordered donor sperm and used a turkey baster ( will never use another one again) and well one got pregnant. Well the baby a boy has had several problems and been in the hospital alot. No one in my family believes me when I tell them God did not intend for women to have children using a turkey baster and maybe that has something to do with the little boy having so many troubles. Two women or two men can not create a baby and maybe people need to think that cheating God is not such a good idea. My family thinks I am nuts. Needless to say I do not host family Thanksgiving dinners anymore except for immediate family.
